Welcome to the conversation.

My ongoing experiment of being without a car continues: I am now in month fourteen.

When I need a car for travelling further afield I hire, and recently I had to do this twice to make the same trip to see my mum who is not well.  The first time I got a Toyota Aygo (one litre engine) and the second time the hire company had to put me up two sizes of car to a Chevrolet Lacetti (1.4 or 1.6 litre engine).

I was shocked by the difference in the amount of fuel both cars used for the same journey.

This hire company asks that the car be returned with the same amount of fuel in as when it is picked up, so I popped £22 in for the 370 mile round journey in the Aygo and a whopping £42 for the Lacetti.

That’s a big difference in the amount of fossil fuel used.

You might be wondering why I’m blogging about this, but part of our “mission” is to interconnect with the natural world with foresight, intention, and love (thanks to Alex McManus for reminding me about this.

What do you think?

Wow. That is an incredible difference. I’d expect a difference, but that is huge.

I think it highlights the need for at least three things:

1) Manufacturers to develop more fuel efficient cars.

2) The importance of taking into account green credentials when buying (or hiring) a car.

3) The need to be intentional about how we use fuel.

You’re right with the things you mention. I think car manufacturers can do more to develop their small cars, but we have to “help” them by wanting them.

I thought it may have been up to twenty to twenty five percent more. Even allowing for the inaccuracy of filling up with fuel on the two cars the difference is staggering, and I almost used twice as much fuel – multiply that by millions of cars – not to mention the gases being pushed out.
